I moved out of my house or rather my parent's house six years ago. I was 18 years old and had just completed school. I do not remember the exact date amidst all the excitement of living an independent life away from the nagging of my mother asking me to eat or clean my room.
The big move was from Chandannagore, a little, quiet suburb near Kolkata to the hustling and bustling of the big city, Bangalore. One thing that went on and on like a record player in my mind through the whole 36 hours of train journey was, 'I want to do this and I can do this.' That became my mantra for the days to come.
Weirdly enough, the city seemed like home to me in the first look. I have always been very fascinated with living alone and away from my family so this was a dream come true. The last hug from my dad when he was leaving did tear me up a bit but that did not stop me from enjoying Bangalore for the rest of the three years.
Amidst all the bad food of the pg and unlimited cash crunches, I have made some absolutely amazing friends while some foes too have been added to my list. From using my first card to buy things to having a mid night coffee and snacks at the local tea shop I did grow up to be someone who got addicted to living alone on her own terms, travelling and making friends all around the world. After six years, I have a little piece of my heart in Bangalore and it will always be a part of the world that I call HOME.
So I would like to dedicate this post to all the people who have been living away from home. People who are cooking their own meals and sometimes cheekily ordering take out every time they are too tired to cook, people who are making new friends every time they move from one place to another. It also goes out to the people who are for the first time moving out from their homes, or finding it difficult to adjust to the new environment. I would like to say, hold on, things do get better with time.
HOME - A place where your feet will leave, but your heart will always stay.'
